The Bride! – Movie Review
There is something refreshing about a film that swings this hard stylistically. The Bride! takes the familiar Frankenstein mythology and twists it into something much stranger and more theatrical. It’s not interested in being a traditional gothic horror. Instead, it leans into a heightened, almost punk energy, blending romance, tragedy and dark humour into a film that feels deliberately stylised from the first frame.
Visually the film is striking. The production design and costuming give the world a bold, operatic feel, full of exaggerated textures and dramatic imagery. It often feels closer to a fever dream than a straightforward monster movie. Director Maggie Gyllenhaal clearly wants the film to have its own identity rather than simply echoing earlier Frankenstein adaptations, and the commitment to that vision is admirable even when the tone occasionally wobbles.
The performances lean into the film’s theatricality in the right way. Jessie Buckley throws herself fully into the role of the Bride, bringing both ferocity and vulnerability to the character. There is a wild, unpredictable quality to her performance that fits perfectly with the film’s chaotic energy. Opposite her, Christian Bale gives a suitably intense turn, grounding some of the film’s more eccentric moments with a presence that still feels larger than life.
Where the film loses a little momentum is with the detective storyline running alongside the central narrative. It never quite feels like it belongs in the same film, and the shift into that investigative thread disrupts the rhythm the story had built. Those sections slow the pacing and pull focus away from the much more interesting gothic romance at the centre. It is not a deal breaker, but it is the one element that never fully clicks.
Still, there is a lot to admire here. The Bride! is strange, stylish and completely committed to its own vision. It might not work for everyone, but it is the kind of bold, oddball swing that makes modern studio filmmaking far more interesting. For viewers open to something a little weird, there is plenty here to enjoy.
