Deadloch Season 2 Review – Streaming on Prime Video
Taking the comedic crime caper action from Tasmania to the Northern Territory for its second season, Deadloch returns with the eccentric, unconventional, yet ultimately endearing detective duo Dulcie Collins (Kate Box) and Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami) are confronted with the shocking death of a colleague, missing backpackers, and human remains found in a dead crocodile in the midst of a war between two crocodile tour companies.
Once again combining the tried and tested tropes of an investigative thriller with the irreverent and wild Australian sense of humour, Deadloch’s second season is just as enjoyably subversive as its first, but now finds narrative strength in building off of the characters audiences grew to love over the last few years. There is a tension between Dulcie and Eddie this season that fuels a lot of the drama, and when a personal tragedy skewers an even bigger wedge between them, it makes their own investigations into the insanity that’s occurring in the Northern Territory even more exciting.
And insanity is the only word to describe what is happening in the Top End during this season, with an even more wild group of characters (and actors really leaning into the fun of it all) building out this world. From the addition of Luke Hemsworth as Jason Wade, one of the aforementioned warring crocodile tour owners, who brings a comically machismo Aussie bloke bravado to each scene, and newcomers like Nikki Briton, who just steals every moment she appears with a brash and loud energy. Once again, Deadloch manages to be just as funny as it is riveting.
The case (or cases) this time around may not reach the level of intrigue and mystery that the first season so strongly built its story upon, with a few twists and reveals not landing as anticipated. But, the intertwining of character plots into the mysteries, and how seemingly insignificant elements work their way into the cases, is still entertaining and engaging viewing.
