A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (2025) Movie Review. –
As someone who’s an easy mark for a well-crafted romance, it’s disappointing to say that A Big Bold Beautiful Journey never quite delivers. The film clearly aspires to be an emotionally resonant exploration of intimacy and commitment, but its execution ultimately falls flat.
There’s a surrealist quality to the narrative that’s intriguing at first. It attempts to capture the complexity of getting to know someone you’re dating, and the internal conflict of whether or not to take the leap into a deeper connection. However, the film’s oddball approach feels more like a distraction than a thoughtful exploration of its central themes.
The leads, unfortunately, have no palpable chemistry, which is fatal in a film that hinges on their relationship. I found it difficult to invest in either of their stories or the various metaphorical “rooms” they enter throughout the film. The emotional beats that the film so clearly aims for (moments of revelation, connection, vulnerability) are instead met with indifference. Despite being the target audience for tear-jerking fare, I found myself unmoved.
While the film has intriguing ideas and ambitions, its inability to execute them in a meaningful way ultimately left me disengaged. There’s an undeniable effort to evoke the emotional depth of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the wistful romance of Before Sunrise, but it falls short in both emotional resonance and narrative cohesion.
In the end, Big Bold Beautiful Journey is a film that wants to be more than it is, one with a unique vision but a flawed execution that leaves its potential untapped.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is in Australian cinemas September 18.
